Cooler gone :(

Ashish Bhateja has finally come back from US. Most people would be happy once their former roomies come back -- for it means phokut ki chocolates. Personally I have lost that craze as the last 2 people who came back with chocolates, got back with bitter ones :)).

But this guy would stay alone, meaning 'our' cooler is gone. On a happier note, our flat had become a store house with 4 coolers and tons of other stuff dumped there. Atleast some khachra out of that would go now.
Infosys Phenomenon

One year ago, my friend and I had gone to meet a school teacher. Mrs Lalwani was a hard tough talking teacher who had thrown dusters at erring students at her time as missiles.

Unfortunately she never managed to hit the erring child, it was always somebody else who had to be rushed to dispensary. So we (passouts of MMS ...err not Multi Media Message of DPS RKP fame, but Mira Model School) were never corrected. But she was as persistent as ever.

On asking how we were doing and other pleasentries, she asked what we were doing. My friend was then working in HCL BPO and me in CSC. And she asked me why I didn't try for HCL?

And two days ago, Ashish and I were having dinner at a thakela tabela in Sec 12/22 Noida, when a gentleman sat himself opposite us. He worked in Haldiram's. Meina bhi tarif kar di haldiram ki...and Ashish ended up asking why the hell is a gujju working in Noida, when so many industries are there in his backyard.

He told us everybody from his parents to neighbors respect him, and tell strangers this lad works in HALDIRAM. And he told us that if we get a chance to work in Infosys, would we understand :).

Happy Birthday Aditya!!

May GOD bless you with all the happiness you seek in this world, spritualistic(I don't know if this qualifies in your context) as well as materialistic(I'm pretty sure here). Enjoy the blessed day and now you are one year more near to break your virgin status ;-).

I wish you many happy returns of the blessed day. Amen!

Eyes wide shut?

I am living without my specs since past week. My last one broke into two pieces and am too lazy to get a new one that early.

So, our team had to give a demo to big bosses on the limping features. It was very nerve-racking. One night before the demo none of my 2 features were running. They simply crashed (which is not to say they wouldnt crash now ;)).

And as we had learned in college, everything completes at the last moment. I learnt only this, what else could teachers who didnt know how to shut down a PC or send their own mails teach.

I wont put more than this, reason:
Mark Jen

Other juntas demo was rock solid. And since it was technical, and nothing irrelevant happened, I am not going to describe it.

My presentation:
At demo time, the conference display was very from our laptop, and I couldnt see anything that I was typing. Luckily I had remembered exactly where where each folder is, and what number an option is :), so I gave the demo. Instead of doing OK, I cancelled :), and the feature still worked.

Sometimes, I selected the wrong file (its number was rather wrong), or a wrong feature popped up.

Course in bad design?

Check out ABN AMRO.

Its maintained by one of the firms (Infy) I admire and have loads of shares of (where tintin worked), but the site sucks.
Really sucks big time. So much that, I want to punch those idiots who made this site.

Every time I visit this site (and I try not to visit it..I last logged in 3 months, and this is my salary account bank :(( ), I want to cry.

Why on hell would the screen size of the site, be 1/4 of the whole screen. This is not a mainframe. Luckily I have found simple operation like transaction details of my account, on fourth trial. Everytime I log in, it decides for me that transaction password be changed.

Security Stuff (that I dont understand :( ).

This is a cool stuff, you can log on to any company pc crossing all the firewalls using one internet connection, you can even take control of the printers in addition to mouse, keyboard and clipboard....Works for windows, don't know if it will work on linux machine.. Setup is very easy, just configure your office machine and control it from home...amazing. Now I don't need VPN to work from home. Aditya, you can start working from home if you need to work over weekends.

Here are few of the my recently best read articles -

Corporate anniversary

2 Years working like an a**...

Hurrah..I didnt know it had already been 2 years since I joined the corporate world, until my mother congratulated me.
And I thought she was congratulating cause papa is hell bent (is he?) on putting up classified for me.

And congratulation to Rajiv, Rupesh also for having survived.
I was just thinking there is not much interest in doing job anymore, may be that fire-in-the-belly of a fresher has finally gone. Already feeling like a old dog here :).

War on Terror?

Few things in life are as catastrophic as parents hurling missiles of girl biodatas/photos at you, and saying "marry now".

And like Britain, I was with my parents (USA) in all this torturing our elder brother (Russia) in giving in his 'freedom'. Well, bhai's 9/11 has happened already. He hasn't faced doomsday, but terror strikes are part of daily life.

And like UK, I got taste of it this week when my papa after having given up on forcing me into buying a tank
decided I must atleast marry as my health is well 'unwell'.

7/7 has happened for me.

Weekend reflections

No, this is not about reflection and introspection APIs. You can read further..that is if you are interested in knowing me.

There was a good series by Rajesh Jain ...
Tech Talk

Regardless of the name, it has nothing to do with technology, except that it's written by a super-techie. And the main point in them was how to spend time we have. And this post is just about how I spend it.

Mon-Friday: Work like a dog. No blogs, minimal emails, read newspapers in office.
Friday evening: Leave early, try to meet a college friend.
Sat morning: dial randomly a college drone. Read blogs. Did you try rssowl? Go out shopping with family.
Sunday morning: Read businessworld. Start reading a book and try finishing it if its small.

Now..tell me where is the time?
By the way another good link Paul. at least read

Slime Of India ? No, Just Medianet.

I had keeping track of this story for quite some time, and I visit a journalist's blog Mall Road just for the heck of it...

Visit this article in free time:
(To be fair to TOI, Mid-day is a stauch rival as TOI is attacking bombay with its latest launches).

BTW, Benett Coleman is a powerful group (1500 crore revenue, national media leader?), so they sued Mediaah.
How VCs and non-geek CEOs ruin the fun?

Remember "Pepsi to Apple" -- famous book by John Scully, about how from almost becoming CEO of pepsi, he got invited by Steve Jobs to head marketing at Apple; how he took control, and along with board threw out the real apple -- Steve :). There is even a movie on this. And from a fortune 500 giant --- Apple almost died.

He made the most idiotic mistakes of all time by making Apple Newton - a PDA which never completed/took off. It had hard-writing recognition instead of some touchscreen :)).

Must Reads for a geek

For a while I was thinking of adding to my wish list of books that must be read for a S/W guy. So, here is a compilation by an expert.

Interesting link -->
Joel on Software Reading List

I would put up my own list some time later. I have written it on a old piece of paper, but would definetely put it on net sometime (although not like this guy has done, seems he has no other work ;)).

Great Noam Chomsky

After watching all the stupid HBO/Star Movies stuff...I hit a good site today.
While wasting money past year on stupid CL, we got some good authors name to study...

After cool 8 months, I finally hit the site of Noam Chomsky and read one of his essays. It is very informative and equally boring much like what effect creativy guy (Edward De bono) or Arun Shourie has on me. Rajiv and Shahi would understand :).

But if you have time, then at least study one of his essays
(like Human rights) , favourable comments from Arundhati Roy (comments), and at least one critique on the guy. I remember Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati calling him a "leftist" (Arundhati is also a 'leftist' for Jagdish).

Happy Reading. I do plan to buy "necessary Illusions" book on the role of media in creating propoganda and public opinion some time.

Boost for the ego (with left-hand compliments in b/w -- Shahi speciality):

My name in the contributer's list has been compelling me for long to indite something here.. but then I've another place to arrange my thoughts...So today as I went through Nitin's Flickr and was putting a counter to his unjustified comment about Aditya's snap.. I felt like doing more justice to this guy than a small quip.. and then I knew the proper location to do that....So here I go...

Aditya is the one of the cutest thing that happened in my life... He himself is not aware of his precious qualities.. This is one of those guys whom you keep on exploring as the time passes.. and you keep finding many hidden treasures.. untouched, untarnished from the ways of this blasphemous world. He is a simply straight forward, disciplined and practical in his approach towards life. I won't mention here about his superb intelligence and a good IQ... or did I!! He is too simple to understand the complex emotions.. I wonder sometimes.. how does he simplifies his life... applying some algorithms here also... (By the way, he is extremely logical and unparalleled techie.. ofcourse I'm speaking on a higher note..). He knows what he has to get... reaches out for it and simply gets it... I didn't understand or haven't been able to sense any modulations in the wave of his life while all his struggles for any aim (although I believe I am too good at it... I can see many raised eyebrows.. ofcourse many of my frnds won't admit publicly that they agree implicitly to this FACT).

Aditya has a quality that none of the femme fatale out there can resist getting seducted towards him... ahem.. platonically not sexually... He is too CARING which Rajiv and I agree unequivocally. One thing about which we used to get irritated with him was his missing company on weekends... He always flees away on weekends from Noida to Delhi (his home where he owns 3 cars and here he rides some 40's bike) when its time to have FUN...(no debauched thoughts plz).. actually this shortfall in him has a bigger brighter side... "He is MAMA's son" (Someone important incidentally quoted it for me).

Why I alluded him as cutest was because he keeps doing many things unknowingly which you simply love observing. He never knows it... even after it happens... he is so simple that nothing is unusual in those acts for him... Aditya is a walking encyclopedia of Hollywood movies, never try playing visual-charade(term coined just now) with him.. before frames of scene may pass before your eyes... you'll know the movie as you have seen it several times. He has a good general knowledge and yes... his roots are from Khalilabad, a place near to GORAKHPUR. (By this time.. you might have known why I say vanity is my favourite sin... just see the usage of I and things about me... in a write up about somebody else... bad habits die hard... you know)

Oh how could I forget to mention his eternally supportive help in initial technical tests during our training. I was his neighbour all the time during campus joining batch training in CSC. I wonder if I would have passed any of the training tests without his help.

Final concluding thought... He is our SERENDIPITY.

Wrong Code?

Good article on How to make Wrong code look wrong. And why doing it sometimes might be craily uneconomical...reminds me of my urges to fix up the crap written in STMG at CSC, and why mai-baap (Ashish) shouted on that. I just wish he could have explained...

Here is a wonderful link to study about source control management from an expert in this field.
In CSC, I used a very simple SCM tool called MS Visual Source Safe, which is for beginners.

But at my new place, I have begun to appreciate what multiple platfroms and multiple products, teams can do to a project. So here goes the link -->

Family Trivia

Jay is coming tonight after a long time from Jaipur. His leaves have started, and what better to use to make of them than to visit Granny's home. Ma-pa, achi mama are waiting since morning.
The Geek himself

This picture is self captured using Ashish bhai's mobile, transferred over bluetooth to my home computer, and then posted on the blog using hello with picasa through my new MTNL broadband connection. The connection rocks !!

I never had so much time to do so many things on the net. Err...I dont know what use is this net anyway ..but for now center of gravitation in our home has shifted to computer and laptop.

Bhai has hacked so that both Laptop and Home PC can now access broad band simultaneously using a proxy server over blue tooth. And I thought proxy servers were for use in CSC only ;).

Larry Page's graduation speech -->

Interesting read.

Thursday, April 28, 2005

An angry post by a senior to my views on alumni group regarding not inviting teachers to the list. To be honest, I found the mail an interesting read :). Here it goes:

Mr Aditya Pandey,

This letter is not at all to argue on to enroll some teacher or not. Basically, If they want to join, can someone stop? So, thats not that important to me to here- they join on request or voluntarily.

What TORTURES me here MOST is the Irresponsible words you have used for Vijay Mam - "I found her dictatorial"!!!
I am TOTALLY SHAKEN and frustrated by such fraud words, you have used for a Mam who is a live symbol of Honesty and Discipline and sincerity at most.

Had you used such words 'dictatorial' for real Dictators of their times like Musharaf, Bush, Saddam- I could have appreciated you well. But, sorry, here it comes revolt from inner...
First rule to remeber- "Freedom of _expression does NOT mean Freedom of illegal, arrogatory words".

I am not taking bias of Mam Vijay Laxami just at all. To be honest, my relationship with Mam is same as your absolutely- GURU-SHISHYA relation that has been running since ages in pios land of nation like India. I speak here not because she has been not just only GURU of me/you, but she has been a pioneer and leader in setting examples in MNIT to reform spirit of Enginnering Education in light of basic ethical values like Honesty, punctuality, discipline, integrity.
She is not just one of architects of soft Engineers like u and me, but also has successfully re-engineering the vision and message we take to corporate world and society while exiting MNIT.
Think over minimum three times before using such irresponsible words for your Guru, A Guru is said to be next to God in simple language. These mails also goes to students who are still under-graduate in MNIT.

I ask you simple Q- If she is 'Dictatorial' in you words, then Can you go to MNIT and take lead for non-dictatorial teachership?
By this time, you might have started calculation in terms of Rupees and Dollars!!!

Does Mam Vijay is equipped with less sharp and shining intellectuals than you or me or us, so that she can not earn in Dollars?
But might be that, she strives for Doctrines and not Dollars in her life- The Doctrines that act as 'Doctors' of mental disabilities/dieseas of 'Engineers' like me and u.

She is serving the MNIT and so nation as a whole with full of her strength and energy at her personal sacrifices also.
Her shining dedication, devotion itself is witness to prove all that.

A few reminders again in last-

Like, A court without a 'code of fair punishment' is NOT court but just a yard of statues which can yield frauds like Laloo and more wild ones.A Teacher without 'code fair punishment' is NOT Teacher but just a Preacher. A Preacher jus preaches and goes away to next village for preaching., but a teacher ensures, what I preached yesterday is followed and digested well. A teacher shapes life of Disciple thru code of conduct where discipline and hard-ship are natural must.
There is nothing wrong if some hardship is introduced. Remember- Gold becomes Pure only when it is put into flames! Land becomes prodictive only when it faces heat from sun.
There is difference between Discipline and Dictatorship, punctuality and pressure.

If you get time, visit some GURUKULAs, where u will see a REAL relationship of GURU-SHISHYA. If u want some addresses, I will give.

She is not among those who can 'sell' marks in lue of CHAPALUSEE. She is brand ambasaddor of brand values that shapes future and fortune of many like us.

I request you do self-analyse and develope Vision as pure as Diamond and take ur words back.

I request all to strengthen senese of respect and devotion for Teachers who had Engineered the building blocks Engineers of nation. One can see here the Ideal Devotion to Teacher (Guru)-

Regards to all offense to none,
Vande Mataram.

I wont vote for that. I remember Vijay laxmi ma'ambeing a bit too strict and overly formal. To be honest-- I found her dictatorial.Teachers have their own problems/weaknesses etc., andI feel this group is more informal alumni group --involve teachers and at least those in college willnot put anything on this group. This is personal opinion -- only my view. You may/maynot subscribe to it. Please feel free to flame :)

Fresher Struggles

This is the underbelly of indian IT industry -- which does all the real work -- Freshers.
They work till odd hours as they have to learn (also cause they are naive, a bit too ambitious).
I was a fresher -- when nobody looked at my profile. No recruiter/consultant touched my CV, or called up.

I have been trying to help an exact similar case from my former firm -- from the initial attempt -- it looks like it would be tough for this guy. He has already been rejected at my firm -- and must say things are not really look up.

Market Cruelty

April time is so cruel -- even market's darling Infy's boss Narayan Murthy had to say he does nt understand markets.

ST M shut its EDA division finally after 5 years just when they had launched their product, some companies got acquirted.

Its more like Appraisal time -- only difference being appraisal of whole companies/division.

Accident time.

Well if one drives down the road...accident would take place. I had an accident today morning while coming to office.

I was not much hurt -- just some blood on typical palm and knee area (how many times does these get hurt), but the riksha wallah...with no injury was acting if a truck had hit it.

Scary thing about accidents is the people who collect around you -- these people were gentler -- not more than 3 people gave me a sermon, and nobody was overly aggressive- after I had paid money to the riksha walla ;)

So, I would think twice before entering into an accident-- cause if you dont get hurt physically -- monetarily you would be :(.

Joining days at Adobe

Well, the place is good in terms of facilities offered -- I particularly like the concept of phokut ka khana, pina (nahi daru/vodka is not available yet).

These guys have made each cube as a lab -- come on I dont need 3 computers in my cube -- esp. when I use only one to chat!

Now I have found the real reason for my exit from CSC -- -those idiots had stopped Yahoo Messenger. Is there any life without it! No wonder I felt lifeless, limited in CSC in my last days -- I could not yahoo !! Preemita listening ?-- include this in your exit interview analysis.

MTNL Employee

Now I had heard that people talk on phone/walk during sleep, but some people dont have sanity even in day time. Especially if this junta is from a sarkari daftar and that too from telephone department.

Yesterday, Mr Kataria (a MTNL engineer) called at home saying he needs to talk with my father now.

Said "it is an urgent call and I have to talk to your papa now!"

I said "I cant give papa our phone as he is taking a shower" .

"Ok Ok !! Boy, give his mobile number. I will directly call him there".

Rupesh Shahi has been pressing me to add an entry for him in this blog. Considering his antics, his description demands much more than this short description. Neverthless, this is the best I can write:
I have met weird, arrogant, insane as well as angels but never met a wider mouth like Rupesh Shahi :).
I know more about HBTI Kanpur than my college. In some time, I would know more people from HBTI than my college. If you need a brand ambassador for some thing or for some one, contact him. You would be a demi god next day. Literally. So, if you can keep your feet on the ground, you would not find a better motivator than this guy. P.S. This is not an advertisement for Shahi Consultants that have made a business out of referring and getting selected infosys junta into CSC.

Time for moving on. I have resigned from CSC on 25 Jan 2004. Looking forward to joining the new place.

I cant believe things change so fast. Till last year, when I was a fresher -- nobody cared. Now, consultants have spammed the mail box!
